Problems? The solution is destroying it.
Posted on: Friday December 31 2010 by Frank
Okay, so I've had a rather strange exchange with a user over on Deviantart. I'm really not sure what point he's trying to make... maybe you guys can help out. It starts out simply enough, but eventually devolves into nonsense.

Him: I try to go to www.edemiaworld.com , but it won't let me. It say Internet Explorer can't display the webpage.
Can you help me?
Me: Well, I'm not sure what to say, as it works fine on my side. Try this link, see if it works... [link]
Him: Nothing work too.
Can you make a new Edemia world webcomic site with a .org?
Me: I'm a bit confused. What will a .org change?
Him: Save he page of endina world to and create a new endinai world site and you have to close enidinaworld.com.
Me: You completely lost me on this one.
Him: I'm sorry.
I misspell Edemia world.

So yeah, help me out guys. What is he trying to tell me? Or am I just being messed around with by a bored troll?

Honestly, I think he solved his own problem... it sounds like he didn't know what he was talking about... then determined he'd been misspelling the URL the whole time.

He could be having a DNS issue or have bad routing to the web server from where he lives.

You can't really do much about it and changing the .com to a .org would not change anything since the website would still be hosted on the same server which is probably giving him the issue.

Since you provided him an URL and it still didn't work for him then that rules out any bookmark issues.

Thanks for the tips. I'll inform the guy about updating his bookmark.

We've been getting 404s too but his proposed solution doesn't match the symptoms.

See, we have a tendency to do periodic archive binges rather than visiting every M/W/F, so use a bookmark in the archive to keep track. Tried to visit http://www.edemiaworld.com/2010/08/02/edemia-north-p06/ and it redirects to http://www.edemiaworld.com/404.shtml/ with the following message:

"The page isn't redirecting properly. Firefox has detected that the server is redirecting the request for this address in a way that will never complete. This problem can sometimes be caused by disabling or refusing to accept cookies."

But as you can see by the existence of this post, removing the /404.shtml/ to just get to the homepage worked completely fine, and a quick poke confirms that the problem is you've changed the format lately, rendering the bookmark obsolete. Bookmark updated, problem solved.

Given the old saw "never assume maliciousness when stupidity will suffice," maybe it's worth asking yon confused user if this is his problem.

As to switching to .org, don't know how that would fix anything at all.

There is no legitimate explanation for this. "A bored troll" is a safe line of logic, but given the imperfect English my default assumption would be more malicious than a troll—he probably wants to steal the domain name and run spam off it when it expires.
